What To Pack: A trip to our Hometowns (a meme!)

Today each student described his or her hometown with a list of things to pack. But, these are not ordinary lists! The stuff we've written here might not fit into your luggage, but it's important to better understand our hometowns. So let's begin with a visit to Macerata, Italy!

Macerata is a medieval hill town in the centre of Italy. It is a well-situated provincial capital halfway between the mountains and the Adriatic sea.

What to Pack: Macerata, Italy

1. some binoculars: These allow you to better watch the fabulous opera at Macerata's Sferisterio, the outdoor opera house. It is the most important attraction of our town. It is a big arena, built in the 19th century. People from all around the world come to watch the operas here, during opera season in the summer.

2. a horse: Macerata has got a Carriage Museum, but there aren't any live horses in the museum. Maybe you should bring your own?

3. some university textbooks: Macerata has got the 3rd oldest university in Italy. If you want to study and you want to get a university degree, you are going to need a textbook. This, not the classes and lectures, is the real way to jump start your career.

4. a bottle of Varnelli: If you want to eat some typical food from the province of Macerata (such as Vincisgrassi and Ciauscolo), you will need some help with digestion (Macerata has some rich food!). Varnelli, the typical digestivo liqueur of the area, is a good bet.

5. A history book: Macerata is a medieval town, and it has a lot of history. Also, nearby the town, there are ruins of the Roman city of Helvia Recina. It's time to open your history book!

6. four keys: These keys will be useful not only to open the four doors of the medieval city (Macerata has four different "gates"), but also to hang out at the popular pub of the same name (Le Quattro Porte!).

7. a volleyball: Last but not least, you will need a volleyball to keep up with the popular (and very good) men's volleyball team, Lube!

Other students wrote about their hometowns as well (we aren't ALL from Macerata!), and we will post those soon. In the meantime, though, considering participating by making a list of your own: What to Pack for a visit to YOUR hometown! We're tagging all of you! That's right--even those without blogs, we'd love it if you would just add some items via the comments section!

My hometown is Oakland , Maine in the USA.

Pack some swimming duds and water ski equipment in the summer and your ice skates and taboggans in the winter.
The town has seven fresh water lakes. If you like fishing you can do this all year around. Fish from the shore or a boat in the summer and dig a hole in the ice and fish in the winter.
Bring money. The USA is getting expensive. But if you use Euros, you will be in luck!
Brink your hiking shoes or your bike. No public transportation other than one local taxi.
There are seven churches in this small town but not like the ones that are here in Italy. Very simple wooden non ornate structures.
You could eat lobster and you might like to try dynamites. That is a very hot recipe.
